He was best in every category of his art and his accomplishments were so wide-ranging - from the depicting of antiquity in his early works to the depths of despair of tragedy in his late religious paintings. Titian set etalons that were followed by generations of artists like Velazquez and Rubens. His drawings are extremely rare. With them Titian showed that he could achieve most excellent results with line. His scrupulous completing and concern for details suggest the space and line, and diversity of material forms in his drawings. He suggested textures through varying styles of line, carefully and economically placed hatchings even created air with line, as in the atmosphere that encloses the things. Unfortunately, there are survived only thirty-five to forty known drawings by Titian, though he was a prolific painter. The woodcut In Italy was taken into new land by Titian, who chose the medium to make public his drawn inventions. He never challenged engraving, but he was very conscious of the importance of printmaking as a means of further expanding his reputation. Titian designed many woodcuts, and collaborated with Domenico Campagnola and others, who produced further prints based on his paintings and drawings. He drew directly on the block, and the cutter followed his marks as closely as possible.
